on the Educational tour of AIEM Members to South India from 19th
Dec. 14 to 1st Jan. 2015
A team of All India Educational
Movement (AIEM) headed by Mr. Amanullah Khan, President and comprising of M/S
Seyyed Mansoor Agha, VP, Abdul Rashid, Gen. Secy, Mozaffar Ali, Treasurer,
Gholam Mohd, Inamuddin, Abdul Jalil, Members and also including Mohd Iliyas and
Riazuddin from Jadeed Foundation Trust visited Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana
from 19th Dec. 2014 to 1st Jan. 2015 to study educational
institutions and interaction with educationists, administrators and professors
in these states. Al- Ameen Educational society was our host at Bangalore and
Muslim Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (MESCO) was our host in
other places in Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana. We were joined by
representatives of 37 NGOs/ Schools of UP at the Bangalore workshop.
We participated in the Al-
Ameen UP Muslims Educational workshop at Hosakote, Bangalore at their
residential school on 19- 20 Dec. 2014. Many eminent educationists, retired
civil servants and administrators addressed the workshop. Mr. P.A. Inamdar
from Pune encouraged the participants to start their educational institutions. He
stated that every child has same talent and capacity and emphasized the need of
change of mind set.
Dr. Fazal Ghafoor,
president Muslim Education Society(MES) informed that the society has 80
schools, 60 Engineering Colleges and about 1 lac students. Regarding
reservation he advised that we should fight for quota within quota as recommended
by Mishra Commission. 100 institutions of MES have Minority status. He
suggested that NGOs of UP should get NOC from present state govt. as it may be
difficult during BJP regime.
Mr. Mohd Harun Rashid of
Murshidabad(WB) informed the participants of negative attitude of the state
govt. as in the last 60 years no school has been given NOC although Al- Ameen has successfully established their
institution. He advised the NGOs to set up Information Centers for
disseminating information with regard to admissions in schools and colleges and
employment opportunities.(his ID is drmako01@gmail.com).
Mr. A.R. Khan (IAS
retd.) presently Advisor in Maulana Azad Education Foundation(MAEF) gave
elderly advice to the participants that there is no short cut to hard
labour and honestly and advised them to
change mind set. He briefly apprised them of the educational and welfare
schemes of ministry of Minority Affairs and the need to have a dialogue with
govt. authorities. He suggested to select persons who have time, resources and
contact with govt. authorities and to shun politics and religion and be upright
and honest.
Mr. TPM Ibrahim Khan,
former Addl. Solicitor General of India and Chairman of all CBSE schools in
Kerala exhorted the participants to have motivation, determination and be a
model community leader and start a school.
At this stage Dr. Mumtaz
Ahmad Khan Chairman of Al- Ameen Educational Society and the sprit behind
this educational movement advised the participants to have their own
educational institutions and have tawakul Al- allah, no botheration for
criticism, resolution and determination,
consistent efforts, to consult brave persons, have no negative attitude
and recruit leaders on merit. On the reason of our failure in the north, he was
of the view that many of us are discouraged from within, have no proper
atmosphere and Satan in there to discourage us. In such circumstances we should
adopt proper strategy.
Mr. Kaleemul Hafiz,
Chairman Al- Hafeez Educational Academy Badaun, UP who had major role in
organizing this workshop and invited most of the participants informed that Dr.
Mumtaz has provided leadership to educational movement in the country and now
this is for us to follow up this meeting. We need to open one school each month
to function on corporate model with 20% poor students. He stated that shortly
one office of the trust will be set up in Delhi and UP each.
Mr. Abdul Rashid Gen.
Secy AIEM introduced the Educational Movement and its activities to the
participants and briefly explained the educational schemes of Ministry of
Minority Affairs and HRD viz Pre- Matric and Post- Matric, Merit cum Means
Scholarship Schemes, UGC fellowship, MAEF Scholarship for girls, Infrastructure
Development in Minority Institutions, Quality Improvement in Madarsas and
National Waqf Development Corporation etc.
Dr. Mumtaz concluded the
discussion of the day by advising the participants to use Zakat money for
scholarship for the poor, set up ITIs and set up core committees to look after
these things. He was also presented by Seyyed Mansoor Agha a momento which was
awarded to him earlier at Delhi by Urdu Development Organization.
On the second day, an institute
of Islamic Studies and Research was inaugurated in the complex by Prof.
Akhtarul Wasey, Commissioner for Linguistic Minorities who apprised the
gathering of the contents of Article 29, 30 and 347 which protect the cultural
and educational rights of minorities. He also enlightened them on the related
provisions of constitution like schedule VIII, Article 350A, 352B and advised
the participants to love their mother, mother tongue, country and religion.
Prof. Aziz Ahmad,
retired principal explained in detail rights of minorities and important Supreme
Court judgments including TMA Pai. He exhorted the delegates to work for
implementation of the reports of Sachar Committee and Ranganath Misra
Commission.
Mr. Fazal Mahmood of Al-
Ameen Nagpur branch also explained in detail the educational and community
welfare schemes of Ministry of Minority Affairs and HRD and his experience of
availing the benefit of these schemes with positive interaction with govt.
authorities. It was informed that 9000 students of 20 institutions are availing
100% govt. scholarship in Bider Distt. The amount of overseas scholarship has
been raised to Rs. 10 lac.
Mr. Zameer Pasha, IAS
(retd.) former secretary to govt. of Karnataka explained his strategy of
bringing Rs. 100 crore from GOI for scholarships of minority students and also
referred to Kundu Committee report in this regard that scholarship budget is
not demand driven. He explained implications of various provisions of Income
Tax Act under DTC and advised that the word ‘Muslim’ should not be there in
form X for availing certain concessions. This will not create any problem in
getting minority certificate.
Dr. Mumtaz observed that an
optimist sees opportunity in every calamity where as pessimist sees calamity in
every opportunity. He felt that Al- Ameen movement will be extended to 75
districts of UP and there will be a nodal officer in every district with a
loose body. He advised to provide special coaching for classes X and XII for
three months. Mr. Kaleemul Hafiz stated that a trust would be setup shortly to
co-ordinate scholarship project in UP. Mr. AR Khan advised that the district
nodal officer should be a man of credibility, integrity and honesty.
Dr. Idrees Qureshi
convener of north zone of MES stated that there are management disputes in many
educational institutions in north run on community basis. He advised
participants to run NGOs/ Schools on corporate basis and assured that MES would
provide 50% financial assistance for opening schools in UP. He also informed
that admission in engineering colleges in south is available almost free of cost.
Khwaja M. Arif,
director of Jahangirabad Institute of Technology apprised the delegates
about this institute and the facilities which include subsidies fee for poor
students and invited them to an educational conference to be held in the
institute on 17- 18 January 2015.

quality education among muslims and dedicated approach as per advice of Saiyid
Hamid.

On 21st Dec.
delegates visited Al-Ameen educational institutions at Bangalore including
Ghosia Women Polytecnic and ITI, PUC, Law College, Arts, Science & Commerce
College, MCA , MBA, College of
Pharmacy, College of Information Science near Lal Bagh.
In the afternoon the delegates
had another session with Dr. Mumtaz, Mr. Kaleemul Hafiz and Mr. Zameer Pasha.
Mr. Hafiz briefed the delegates about procedure of setting up a trust or a society with a
notable difference that a trust is a milkiyat and has no election condition
where as a society is an association of people where election is compulsory in
3- 5 years. He advised that minority character should be kept in view while
forming a trust or a society. In his opinion, a CBSE school in UP costs Rs. 50
lac and an ITI Rs. 30 lac.
Mr. Z. Pasha emphasized the
need to give priority to education and avail the benefit of PM’s 15 point
program. Mr. Subhan sharif, Secretary of Al- Ameen promised to help UP
NGOs in setting up educational institutions. Dr. Mumtaz further suggested to
setup a trust for scholarship in UP and Delhi and assured to provide Rs. 1 lac
as initial contribution. Syyed Agha also offered Rs. 10,000 for proposed trust.
He also presented a scroll of award to Dr. Mumtaz given by Urdu Development
Organization.
In the evening AIEM team was
guest of SHAHEEN group of institutions in collaboration with MESCO
of Hyderabad. Mr. Abdus Subhan, Director and Mr. Abdul kadeer,
Secretary of the NGO briefed us about their activities of setting up model
schools starting with Bider district and having about 11,000 students Mr.
Kadeer stated that 0- 6 years of age are most important in child’s life.
Schools should be a social enterprise. They have setup SHAHEEN hifzul Quran
plus, got highest medical seats in India and presently carrying on educational
carvan in Karnataka having organized 850 workshops so far with well known
motivator Mr. Sayeed Ahmad.
On the 22nd December
we visited DPS school Bangalore (north) and met its principal Ms. Manju
Arif and Chaiman Mr. K. Rahman Khan. Mr. Amnullah Khan president of AIEM
informed Mr. Rahman Khan the purpose of visit of the delegation and know the
secret of success of educational institutions in the south . We were informed
that this school has 5,000 students and 300 teachers and has minority status
although ratio of muslim students is only 20%. Mr. Rahman Khan told us that
educational movement in south is 100 years old but in north India we have mind
set problem. Sharing power is important in democracy. A swami of Lingayats Muth
in Karnataka with 17% population only is controlling the affairs of the state.
The value of Waqf properties in the state is reportedly 38,000 crore.
In the afternoon we visited Osis
International School which has a Cambridge accreditation for international exam
, started in 1999 and having 1200 students. We had interaction with the
principal Ms. ………… who informed us that school has 99% Muslim students and has
10th rank in the state and is within 100 in India. Annual fee is
approximately Rs. 80,000 per Annam. The discipline and cleanliness in the
school impressed us.
On the 23rd December
we moved on for Mysore and on the way visited Ghousia Engineering College
of Al- Ameen Group in Ramanagaram Distt. and met its principal. We were taken
around the complex and left for Srirangapatnam where we met Mr. A.R.
Qamaruddin, General Secy and other teachers in Darul Umoor an ideal religious
institution with simplicity like Shanti Niketan. Mr. Qamaruddin briefed us
about Darul Uloom which was inaugurated in 2002 and informed that Madarsa
students from all over the country after having completed Almiat/ Fazilat join
this school and given exposure to English language and science subjects. It has
good liabrary and computer lab and residential complex. Later we also visited
tomb of Tipu Sultan and moved on to Mysore and stayed at DPS guest house.
On the 24th December
we first met Prof. B. Sheikh Ali, Ex VC who has authored a number of
books. President AIEM reminded him of the educational carvan taken to Malaysia
where he had also participated. He informed Prof. Sheikh of the purpose of
present visit and the proposed carvan in Rajasthan towards the end of February
2015. He requested him to participate or at least give a message which was
agreed to.
Prof. Sheikh advised us to do
self help and the secret of success is in leading pious life, remain in touch
of Quran, speak less and stick to the truth.
His said success depends on ‘Zar’,
Nazar, Sabar and Muqaddar - resources, vision, patience and on luck.
We were told that B. Sheikh Ali
is like Saiyid Hamid in south India.
Later we visited Phulwari, a
Muslim girls orphanage having 243 girls being run for 100 years. Presently Mr.
Abdul Aziz Chand is its Manager.
Afterwards we visited a number
of educational institutions managed by Rifaul Muslemeen Educational Trust
including Women Dental College (Urdu/ English medium), Farooqia Women
Polytechnic. The trust has assets worth Rs. 600 crore. Other institutions
visited by us were Hilal High School, Drool Uloom Siddiqia, Gousia Dental
College up to PG lavel. The trust organized a grand reception for our delegates
in the evening in which office bearers of the trust including Taj Mohd Khan,
Secretary and Riaz Ahmad president and Prof. Sheikh Ali Participated and
appreciated our visit to south Indian institutions for promotion of education
in north
Early in the morning of 25th
December we moved on for Calicut via Ooty where we had our lunch at Hotel
Paradise, took a quick round of botanical garden and continued our long journey
for Calicut where we could reach at 10:30 Pm. Unfortunately we missed a meeting
and dinner arranged for us by Mr. Pasha
IAS, DM of Bider on account of late arrival at Calicut.
On 26 December, we first
visited Markaz Knowledge City away from main city proposed to be
developed in 125 acres by the year 2020 where Unani Medical College was under
construction. Later we met Sheikh Abubakr prominent religious leader of south and Head
of Markaz-us- Saqafat-us- Sunnia in the central office and had our
lunch. Markaz is reported to be largest religious, educational and charitable
organization in Asia.. In the interaction with the Sheikh and his son Dr. Abdul
Salam Mohammed CEO of Markaz, the delegates gave their introduction and
president AIEM informed Sheikh Abubakr of the purpose of our visit which was
appreciated by him. We were informed that about 70,000 students have already
passed out from the Markaz and 20,000 are presently in its schools/colleges
including 2,500 orphans. The Markaz is 35 years old and Madarsa education is compulsory for all
students. They have integrated educational system up to class X and there after
one can do Alimiat/ Fazilat or can go for modern education like B.A., M.A,
LL.b, etc. Markaz has 500 CBSE schools where they have Malayalum and Arabic
languages up to Xth level. Their monthly expenditure is Rs. 3 crore. (website:

In the afternoon we visited Mukkam
Muslim orphanage which was set up in 1956 and having 1200 orphans from all
over the country and spread over 150 Bighas. Education is provided up to
graduation level and govt. financial assistance is also available @ Rs. 525 per
month per child. Later we had a quick visit to KMCT Medical College and
Hospital but could not have interaction with their management or faculty.
On the 27th December
our team participated in MES Golden Jubilee celebrations in Calicut where American
Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) was organizing their 23rd
annual international convention on education and Gala Award Ceremony. In the
welcome address Mr. Fazal Ghafoor, president MES stated that MES is the biggest
socio- educational organization in India with about 100,000 students. He spoke
about reservation of Muslims in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and advised
that we should stop complaining and use available opportunities. NGOs should
press for implementation of Misra Commission report and work hard for promoting
education in Gujarat, Bihar and UP. He was of the view that we can have 100%
reservation in minority schools and colleges.
In his presidential address, Dr.
A.R. Nakadar of AFMI stated that their organization is working for
educational empowerment of minorities. He advised that our youth should have
honesty, character, faith, education, dedication, vision and motivation. Dr.
Aslam Abdullah informed that 23% Muslims in Kerala have higher education as
against 37% in USA.
Mr. E. Ahmad,
former Minister of State for External Affairs stated that Kerala is path maker
for Muslim education. Malaaralone has 434 colleges including engineering
colleges for women. Our literacy rate of 96% is highest in the country and
Muslims can liberate theme selves through education only.
Mr. A.R. Nakadar and Dr.
Hussain Nagamia jointly gave away awards from AFMI to 10 meritorious students
throughout the country who had secured 95% plus marks in X and XII board exams.
Dr. Shabistan Ghaffar,
Chairperson of Committee on Girls Education in NCMEI praised the award giving
activity of AFMI to topper minority students in India and emphasized the need
for empowerment of women. Mr. Wasi
Naumani, Secretary IICC, New Delhi also spoke on Quran and Cosmos.
In the afternoon AIEM team joined
the award giving ceremony of Muslim Education Trust (Kerala Chapter) and
participated in the get together program of AIGA. Later we joined the get
together jointly organized by MES and MESCO.
On the 28th December, our team moved for Mangalore and
after reaching there had a luncheon meeting with the faculty of Bearys
Institute of Technology. Director Dr. M. Sainath informed us
that the institute has 1200 students in various departments. Later we visited Yenepoya
University with Medical and Dental Colleges owned by Abdullah Kunhi. Late
in the evening we visited UNITY health complex owned by Mr. Habibur Rahman.
All these institutions have minority status. Before leaving for Bhatkal, Mr.
Riaz and Omar of Hidayah Foundation gave us a presentation on their
activities of empowerment of women and children. The foundation has selected
1500 poor families in neighborhood and providing financial assistance for
education and healthcare of their children. They are also organizing career guidance and parents counseling.
On the 29th
December, the delegation moved to Bhatkal but on the way visited Manipal
University. This is the first private university with minority character
spread over 1000 acres. Their vision is” accomplishment “The University has
28,000 students and has 100% placement record. The famous TMA Pai case on
implication of minority character was moved in Supreme Court by this
university. On the way we also visited Bodriya Jama Masjid and School Complex
in Udipi district established by Mohd Ashraf Beary.
On reaching Bhatkal, Mr.
Abdul Rahim, Gen. Secy and other office bearers of Anjuman Hami-e-
Muslemeen gave us a warm welcome at their Institute of Technology and
Management which is providing engineering education up to Ph.D level. Our team
had a brief interaction with the management and president AIEM informed them of
the purpose of our visit. The college complex includes PUC and Degree College
for man and women, Engineering and MBA College. B. Ed and PHD etc. having 7,000
students. Subsidy is being given to poor students up to 90% Urdu Medium classes are being encouraged and
Diniyat classes are up to PUC level. Women College is separate.
Later we participated for some
time in century celebrations of Majlis Islah-o-Tanzeem Bhatkal where
intellectuals were speaking on the promotion of quality education. Mr. Musa
Raza IAS (retd.) advised to strive for Nobel Prize. Topper of schools were
given awards by the Majlis. Later we also visited 14 years old Maulana Ali Mia
Academy and met Maulana Iliyas sb. who is piloting establishment of APS
(Ali Public School) in many states. Maulana Iliyas intends to set up Ali Mia
Islamic University near the academy for which infrastructure is being
developed in phrases.
Education up to 12th
class would be hostel based separately for male and female students. Hifz would
be compulsory for all students. Academy has so far prepared syllabus up to
upper KG only. Some of the delegates picked up their books for study. Just when
we were preparing for Maghrib program at the university complex, we learnt the
news of sad demise of our patron Saiyid Hamid and prayed for his
maghfirat. We moved to Hubli in the night it self so that we can cover further road
journey up to Hyderabad to join the program of on reception at Maulana Azad
National Urdu University. Our night stay at Hubli was arranged by Mr. Abdus
Subhan of Shaheen.
We started early on 30th
Dec. so as to reach Hyderabad in time. But the distance via Raichur and Mehboob
Nagar was considerable and we could reach MANUU in Hyderabad after 7:00 pm
only where Mr. Khwaja M. Shahid, our vice president and presently PVC of MANU
was eagerly waiting for us. Mr. Shahid informed that Engineering and Management
seats in many colleges in Hyderabad are going vacant which need our attention
in north. All education in MANU is provided in Urdu including technical
education in polytechnic and ITI. MANU has 11 courses and 150 study centers and
presently caters to 40,000 students through distance education. Our host had
made arrangements for our stay in hotel Grand Plaza near Haj House.
In the morning of 31st
Dec. Prof. Mohd Masood Ahmad, DG Vishwa Vishwani and visiting professor
in 120 universities took charge of our delegation to show around educational
institutions in Hyderabad and nearby areas. He informed the delegates that Andhra
Pradesh has 25% professional education of the country with 875 engineering
colleges, 1057 MBA colleges, 500 MCA colleges spread over 43 universities.
In the forenoon we visited MS
Education Academy and had interaction with their directors. President AIEM
informed the academy officials of the purpose of our visit. Started in 1991 the
academy has 48 schools/ institutions, 2,000 employees and 18,000 students. The
academy is preparing students for competitive exams and medical and engineering
colleges focusing on class XI- XII. Their schools provide Islamic curriculum up
to class III and they have 3 branches in Delhi (Old Delhi, Yamuna Vihar and A.
F. Enclave). They have also MS- 30 for IIT and got 97 medical seats in 2013.
Their goal is quality education in Islamic environment working on commercial
basis for good quality but charity is also given on merit. Orphans are given
50% concession and children of Ulema 40%. Annual planning and good teaches are
necessary in their view.
Later our group was taken to Shadan
Institute of Technology established by Late Vizarat Rasul Khan, Ex MLA. The
trust has established three medical colleges including one for women. We
visited VRK medical college and taken around some class rooms and labs. The
trust has 14 Engineering Colleges, 25 schools. In 1984 first Muslim Medical
College was set up with minority character by Salahuddin Owaisi. VRK has
so far set up 50 institutions where 100% Muslim reservation is allowed. 60%
seats are on merit in Medical Colleges with annual fee of Rs. 60,000 only but
remaining 40% is management quota. In total 150 seats, 140 are given to Muslim
students.
Thereafter we moved to Turkish
residential cum office complex and enjoyed their lunch. They showed us
their Iqbalia Junior college (PUC) at Nizam Colony which is providing
quality education and their students have achieved state ranks with more than
95% marks. Their annual fee is Rs.18, 000.
In the afternoon we visited the
famous Indian School of Business spread over 235 acres which is
comparable to top universities in the world and where senior executives from 40
countries are provided education in Business Management. The school has
capacity for 550 students with annual fee of Rs. 32 lac. There is a big
auditorium and library containing 50,000 books. In the evening we visited
high-tech City and had our dinner at Nizam Club.
On the last leg of our tour on
1st Jan. 2015 we visited educational and health care institutions of
our host i.e. MESCO which included their diagnostic center, high school
with a special class for teaching Quran with Tajweed and Arabic language and
Grammar, Institute of Management and Computer Science and College of Pharmacy.
Later we moved to Challenger
International School in Ranga Reddy district financed by Indian Muslim
Relief and Charity (IMRC) of Mr. Maqsood Ahmad of USA.
Shaheen group is also setting up a women wing with hostel facility in the same
campus. There are 560 students majority of whom is Muslim. 10% of students are
supposed to be orphans with full financial assistance from IMRC. Monthly fee is
Rs. 12,000. Qasim Bhai of London has donated land for the school and Rs. 50 lac
in cash. IMRC has set up an Indian wing with the name of Sahayata Trust
which is under taking relief operations for poor and the destitute. The trust
organizes special relief program during Ramadan and Eid-ul-Azha. In the health
care field they have provided 2,500 free dialysis, 2,700 free check up and
screened 19,000 for eye diseases. They have a budget of Rs. 1,000 crore for
setting up Masjid cum School complexes. Their next area of operation is Mewat
in Haryana. Special attention is being paid to poor Muslims in coastal AP where
Muslims have forgotten even Kalima and Namaz and even going to Churches. They
are being reconverted and provided wells in water scant areas. The delegates
were informed that Jahangirabad Technical Institute was set up by them 10 years
bach where majority of students are provided financial help. The trust proposes
to establish online university and 20 schools in backward areas.
Mr. Waheed Qureshi,
Managar Sahayata Trust gave us further information regarding relief operations
including arrangement of iftar and dinner program with Dawa for poor Muslims
and Non Muslims. The trust provides Ramadan kits and animal sacrifices in large
number and proposes to increase its activities in UP and north east.
Our last visit was to Hyderabad
Institute of Excellence in Vikarabad established by Ghyasuddin Babu Khan
Trust near a hillock. The institute is spread over an area of 120 acres and
is a 100 crore project. Our group interacted with senior management i.e. Mr.
Mohd Jawed Hood, and
Dr. Sajid Ali, campus head. After introduction, President AIEM informed them of the purpose of our visit. Mr. Mohd Jawed informed us that the institute provides top level quality education, presently to class XI and XII only to 270 students at an annual fee of Rs. 2.50 lac (50% is charged from some meritorious students). We were informed that 1.5 lac engineering seats are going vacant in Hyderabad. The trust has been providing scholarship up to Rs. 7- 8 crore annually. Presnetlly meritorious and poor students are given scholarship also. Some of the class rooms were constructed with IDB assistance. Annual budget of the institute is Rs. 11 crore out of which four crore is for scholarship.

Our team members departed to
their destinations in the forenoon of 2nd Jan. 2015.
GD Goenka Signature School is a premium CBSE affiliated day, weekly and full boarding school. It is located on a sprawling 20 acre campus on Sohna Road, Gurgaon, just 60 minutes away from the New Delhi airport. Parents, visitors and the community are already claiming it to be way ahead of most schools in India, including most international schools.
